Playing with the huerta: 15 activities to discover fruit and vegetables

Discovering the huerta through play

Where does a carrot grow? What does an orange look like inside? Which foods can we find at the market? Simple questions can start a conversation, spark curiosity and turn into a shared moment of play.

Our association has created Jugando con la huerta, a free Spanish-language activity book with 15 activities across 40 pages. It introduces fruit and vegetables to young children as part of a project for children aged 0 to 5, their families and educational settings. The aim is to encourage curiosity about food and a positive relationship with it, connecting everyday discoveries with the huerta, our local growing landscape.

What is inside the book?

The document combines illustrated cards with opportunities to observe, match, sort and talk. You can find matching food pictures, group them by colour, compare sizes or discover what they look like on the outside and inside. Other activities explore where foods grow and their journey from garden to table.

There are also pages for following patterns, counting, tracing paths and colouring. The final activity, Hoy en el mercado, invites you to find a seasonal fruit or vegetable, look at its name and origin, and draw what you have discovered. The printed page becomes a starting point for noticing the world around you.

Time together, without rushing

There is no need to complete the book or finish every worksheet. Looking, pointing, naming and inventing a story are also ways to take part. The opening guidance suggests adapting the activities to each child’s age, experience and interests. Children do not need to be able to read or write.

Always use the materials with adult supervision. An adult should cut out and prepare the pieces. For babies or children who still put objects in their mouths, use complete sheets held by an adult and do not offer loose pieces. These instructions are included at the beginning of the document.

Download it from Resources

The activity book is now available free of charge in the healthy eating section of Resources. The PDF is in Spanish and is 124.5 MB, so we recommend downloading it over wifi. You can then select the pages you want to use and print them in colour on A4 paper at actual size, following the instructions in the book.
